June 15th commemorated the eight year of recognizing World Elder Abuse. Elder abuse, like domestic violence and child abuse, comes in many forms. It is recognized by experts as a public health crisis for which there are no socio-economic borders. Millions of older Americans are abused, neglected, or exploited each year, with an estimated 84% of cases going unreported. Annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is a great opportunity to shed light on the problem of elder abuse and generate support for programs and services. World Elder Abuse Awareness Day was launched on June 15, 2006 by the International Network for The Prevention of Elder Abuse and the United Nations World Health Organization. On March 9, 2012 the UN General Assembly established June 15th.
